Big Players

The Big Players section showcases the guys who made this difference for their team during the past week. Consider it an MVP section, but I look for more than just stats and tangible play.

2000-2001 Bowls

Las Vegas Bowl, UNLV vs. Arkansas

Running back Brandon Holmes rushed for 99 yards on 7 carries as the Razorback lose to UNLV, 31-14

Oahu Bowl, Virginia vs. Georgia

Quarterback Corey Phillips went 22 of 35 for 213 yards and a touchdown, leading the Bulldogs to a 37-14 win over the Cavs.

Music City Bowl, West Virginia vs. Ole Miss

Remember this name: Eli Manning, Freshman QB. Mannning rallied the rebels from a 49-16 4th-quarter deficit to put life in the Ole Miss offense, throwing for 167 yards and 3 touchdowns in about 15 minutes of play. While the comeback fell short at 49-38, Manning left the Rebel fans quite a bit to look forward to.

Peach Bowl,Georgia Tech vs. LSU

QB Rohan Davey, who took over for Josh Booty in the second half, threw for 174 yards and three touchdown passes to rally the Tigers to a 28-14 come-from-behind victory over Georgia Tech.

Independence Bowl, Mississippi St. vs Texas A&M

Take your pick:

  • Running back Ja'Mar Toombs ran for 193 yards and three touchdowns.
  • Willie Blade blocked an Aggie point-after attempt, which was recovered and returned to the end zone by Eugene Clinton for two points and the final margin of victory for the Bulldogs.
  • Quarterback Wayne Madkin runs the ball in from 6 yards during MSU's overtime possession, providing the 43-41 win.

Cotton Bowl, Kansas State vs. Tennessee

Vols senior running back Travis Henry racked up 180 rushing yards on a dismal day for the Volunteers, as they fall 35-21 to the Wildcats.

Outback Bowl, Ohio St. vs. South Carolina

Running back Ryan Brewer, filling in for the suspended Derek Watson, rushed for 219 yards and 3 touchdowns in the SEC's most dominating performance of the bowl season.

Citrus Bowl, Michigan vs. Auburn

Tiger quarterback Ben Leard was 28-of-37 for a 394 yards and 3 touchdowns, which were both bowl records for Auburn. The Tigers' comeback against the Wolverines fell short, 31-28.

Sugar Bowl, Miami vs. Florida

Wid receiver Reche Caldwell caught six 6 passes for 110 yards as the Gators lose to their in-state rivals, 37-20.
