After making its second appearance in the SECCampionship Game last season, Auburn Tiger fans may have expectations of great things in 2001. The Tigers, however, will 87% of their offensive production with the departure of quarterback Ben Leard and running back sensation Rudi Johnson. Johnson, who transferred to Auburn from Butler County Junior College in Kansas, was the AP SEC Offensive Player of the Year, as well as the SECCaches' Player of the Year. Johnson and his 1687 yards and 13 touchdowns are leaving for the NFL next year, which leaves the Tigers with big shoes to fill at the tailback and quarterback positions.

The good news for Auburn is that they will return 7 starters on offense, including there entire offensive line, and top 2 receivers, Ronney Daniels and Marcel Willis. Daniel and Willis combined for 730 yards and 4 touchdowns, and may be asked to help out a young group of quarterbacks.

More good news comes in the recruiting department. Among a fine group of incoming freshmen is running back Carnell Williams, out of Attalla AL. Williams is the #5 rated back by Rivals.com and was also recruited by Alabama, Florida State, LSU, and Tennessee. The defense will also get a boost from a nice recruiting class that includes 5 top linebackers, among them #6-rated Lemarcus Rowell from Opelika, Alabama.
